Open lecture – A systemic functional approach to translation competence, June 8, 6 PM, Université du Luxembourg, Campus Walfer

A systemic functional approach to translation competence
    by
Prof. Dr. Viviana Gaballo, University of Macerata

Université du Luxembourg, Campus Walfer, ROOM: MONTESSORI

In the past decades in which Translation Studies has become firmly established as an academic discipline in its own right, research flourished as to the designation and definition of translation competence. The concept is of particular relevance to translator training since it drives decisions and choices in the design of a syllabus and can also be considered as the litmus paper against which to test the acquired competence. This becomes evident from the novel approach suggested in this lecture offering a new model of translation competence based on the integration of two apparently opposite views, the holistic view of PACTE’s multicomponent model and the minimalist view of Pym’s approach. The result is a versatile translation competence model that restores the centrality of the translation process while relating it to interacting background dimensions. The effectiveness of the suggested systemic functional model also lies in the fact that it can be usefully applied to assess translation competence acquisition from both the qualitative and the quantitative viewpoint.

Internships: Development and innovation in concurrent engineering settings of spacecraft design

    January 11th, 2011

Internships: Development and innovation in concurrent engineering settings of spacecraft design

Space crafts are complex. The development processes of these systems even more. Concurrent Engineering (CE) is a methodology to sustainably increase the efficiency of this activity, especially during the analyses, evaluation and design phases of a project life-cycle. An interdisciplinary team comes together and simultaneously work on the same project converging through different iteration cycles up to a certain design maturity. Sharing the different expertises and ideas during moderated and “off-line” sessions, monitored and guided by the systems team and the customer, the study leads to successful analyses and preliminary design stages in short periods of time.

However, within this group process, being among others multi-cultural and -lingual, and processes based on a formal approach with a common goal and profiles of team members, Concurrent Engineering still offers great potential for improvements with respect to e.g. design interventions, schedule flexibility, team interaction and knowledge management.

The DAAD RISE and RISE worldwide internships provide unique opportunities to participate in this activity by systematically analysing a comprehensive data set, from a solar mission design study. Special tools and databases will be used and the work will be done within the dynamic environments at the University of Luxembourg and the German Aerospace Center (DLR) – Institute of Space Systems in Bremen, Germany.

FNR-funded PhD-research “Interacting in Luxembourgish as an Additional Language”, Adrienne Lambo Ouafo

    June 16th, 2010

Adrienne Lambo Ouafo, who graduated from the trilingual research MA-programme “Learning and Development in Multilingual and Multicultural Contexts” (2009) will join DICA-lab with her PhD-research, focusing on “Interacting in Luxembourgish as an Additional Language”, funded by the FNR-AFR scheme, starting in September 2010.
