Charles is Professor for Learning with Educational Media at the University of Luxembourg, coordinator of the domains “Activity and Development” and “Media and Learning” of the international Masters programme “Learning and development in multilingual and multicultural contexts”. After experiences as primary school teacher and school inspector Charles joined teacher education. He earned a doctoral degree in educational sciences from the University of Frankfurt.
He substantially contributed to fundamentally reform Luxembourgish teacher education on the basis of a research-based sociocultural approach to learning and development taking into account the complexity of the multilingual and multicultural local context. He was the co-initiator of the multi-year development project DECOTEC “Development of Expertise in Collaborative Open Technologically Enriched Educational Contexts” and formerly director of the new transdisciplinary teacher education programme.
Charles is teaching modules on innovative learning environments and methodological issues of educational research. His overall approach is to tightly connect learning, research and further development of the study programmes he is responsible for.
His research interests and activities are focusing on the following fields:
-Socio-cultural and Activity Theory based research on learning and development,
-Development and learning within and across communities and disciplines,
-Developmental Work Research in educational and work contexts,
-Mediational tools for building learning communities,
-Development of expertise and competence.
Charles holds the institutional responsibility for the symposium.
